Siloam Children's Hospice

As part of our Awareness Program, A.R.C. Worldwide Trust staff made several visits to Siloam Children’s Hospice, located on the island of Curaçao in the Netherlands Antilles, in July 2006.

Established in 1989, the purpose of Siloam is to provide a temporary home for terminally ill children. Siloam works according to the principle that all children who are admitted deserve to be cared for in a loving, caring and safe environment. All deserve the best possible treatment, irrespective of how long their life span is.

To date, Siloam has admitted and cared for children with a variety of illnesses, including those with HIV/AIDS, cancer, inoperable heart defects, kidney disease, neurological disorders, among others. At the time of our visit, Siloam was providing accommodation and care for eight children.

Siloam does not receive any subsidies from the Netherlands Antilles or the Dutch governments. Instead, Siloam operates entirely by voluntary donations, gifts and bequests from individuals, companies and church groups. At the time of our visits, donations of nappies and baby food were especially appreciated.

Therefore, in line with our Aid Program we chose to provide a number of items to the Siloam Children's Hospice. Among the items donated were nappies, baby food, and some items of children's clothes. Given the year-round high temperatures in Curacao, we also decided to donate a fan for use in the children's bedrooms.

In June 2007, A.R.C. Worldwide Trust volunteer Jacqueline Cáceres made a follow-up visit to Siloam. Siloam is in the process of expanding the hospice, the children’s pavilion, the workplaces and the office space. To do this, a wall is needed to be built in order to prevent the construction materials from being stolen. According to Siloam staff, the building of this wall is the primary current necessity of Siloam.

However, food and clothing for the children are also constantly required. Therefore, in line with our Aid Program,  A.R.C. Worldwide Trust donated a variety of baby food items.

The A.R.C. Worldwide Trust would like to express its sincere gratitude and appreciation to Broeder Herman, the founder and manager of Siloam, who was extremely accomodating during each of our visits, allowing us unlimited access to Siloam, which enabled us to spend quality time with the children.
