Stichting Kinderwerk Stichting Kinderwerk is a religious group that works with disadvantaged children and youth from slums and poor families on the island of Curaçao. Managed and coordinated by Elbert and Corri Schouten and assisted by a team of volunteers, the organisation works at different places and poor neighborhoods around the island. Their work consists of not only giving time and care to the children, but also to their families, as well as providing support in anyway they may need it. Every Sunday, Stichting Kinderwerk hosts activities for the children. Volunteers from the organisation collect the children from their homes, and take them to the centre where the activities are held. As soon as they arrive, the kids are offered a glass of juice, and sit together ready to enjoy and participate in the activities. In July 2007, A.R.C. Worldwide Trust volunteers Jacqueline Cáceres and Gonzalo Musante went along and participated in the activities. During their visit, a total of 26 children were involved in the activities run by Stichting Kinderwerk, which included Elbert Schouten and his wife Corri as entertainers, and volunteer Anne Marie Smith who played the flute and told stories. As with all the Sunday activities, during the visit by A.R.C Worldwide Trust volunteers the children sang many songs, participated in prayer time, heard stories, and joined in the sharing of food. Since it was school holiday time, the children were also given food to take home and share with their families. Overall, the purpose of the activities is to bring children together and allow them to participate in endeavours they would otherwise not likely have access to. Stichting Kinderwerk does not receive any local government funding or support, and relies solely on donations and gifts to undertake their activities. In particular, one of the primary needs of the organisation is volunteers.
